Maths

The maths curriculum at Sheffield Springs Academy helps students become confident, resilient problem-solvers who understand and use mathematical language, present their work clearly, and see connections across topics. The aim is for every student to enjoy maths, succeed, and be inspired to continue learning beyond school.

Curriculum

At Sheffield Springs Academy we want our students to think of themselves as mathematicians.

We want them to feel confident solving problems, experience success both in their lessons and assessments and to have the resilience to ‘have a go’ when the solution to a problem is initially not obvious. We want them to understand and use mathematical vocabulary to describe the maths they are doing. We want students to work towards presenting their work clearly and logically.

We aim for our students to maximise their mathematical potential by following schemes of learning, which are based on the National Curriculum, that logically build on prior learning to take students from more basic to increasingly complex mathematical ideas. We want our students to see the links between different areas of mathematics and to understand why those connections exist. Schemes of learning also build on learning and knowledge from one year to the next and prior learning for each topic is clearly highlighted for teachers’ planning and to share with students.

Our students feel supported and challenged in lessons. They will be taught by teachers with excellent subject knowledge who model a love of learning and of maths. There arehigh expectations of students inside and outside the classroom. Teachers use assessment to inform their planning and to address misconceptions. Students are not afraid to make mistakes – they persevere and are resilient. Students will have a clear understanding of their areas of development and what they can do to improve in these areas.
We want our students to understand how the maths they learn in class relates to aspects of the real world. They should feel confident in using maths in everyday life and be encouraged to continue studying maths in some form beyond their formal studies at Sheffield Springs Academy.

Above all, we want our students to have a positive experience of mathematics in the classroom, through independent work and through assessment. We aim to nurture them in a supportive manner that helps them make the most of their talents and promotes good progress for every student.
