Understanding GCSEs and BTECs

At Key Stage 4, students will take a mixture of qualifications:

GCSE Courses

GCSEs are graded 9–1 and are assessed mostly through exams at the end of Year 11. Some GCSE subjects include practical or coursework elements. Subjects vary in structure—some are highly academic while others include more practical learning.

BTEC / Cambridge National / OCR Vocational Courses

These courses offer a more practical, work-related style of learning. They include a mixture of coursework and examinations spread across Years 10 and 11. Qualifications are awarded as Pass, Merit, Distinction or Distinction*, and each is equivalent to one GCSE. They suit students who prefer continuous assessment and applied learning.
