Dear Parents and Carers

This summer term has been extremely busy at Sheffield Springs Academy.  We have said goodbye to our Y11 and Y13 students and wish them well for results later this summer.

Y13 results will be available to students on Thursday 18th August 2016 from 10.00am and GCSE results will be available to Y11 students on Thursday 25th August 2016 from 10.00am.

Within this newsletter are important dates regarding when the academy opens after the summer break and I ask for your continued support to ensure all students return on time, in full academy uniform and equipped for learning.

I would like to share with you some highlights from this summer term.

The Speaker of the House of Commons School Council Competition

During the last two terms the student council have considered ways of improving the learning environment at Springs Academy. They have produced a presentation which makes recommendations about the way we deal with waste, decoration and display, student lockers and social areas.  This was submitted as an entry to the Speaker’s Council Awards 2016 and was recognised by the award of Highly Commended Status. The Academy now displays this logo on our letterhead.

University Visits

Year 10 students had a wonderful opportunity to visit a University last week. Students visited universities in Sheffield, York, Leeds and Cambridge. The trips were an opportunity to provide students with an understanding of how universities operate, the courses they offer and hopefully inspire them to want to find out more. During their academic studies next year we will be supporting our students to make good progress with their learning, to achieve fantastic outcomes in their exams so that they have the choice to study the courses they want to post 16. It is hoped from that point a number will go on to University and we will be trying to promote this at every opportunity.

Early Risers

This term we have been delighted to welcome Year 6 students into the academy for our ‘Early Risers’ programme. For the final three weeks of term students have become familiar with their new learning environment as well as the high expectations that we set in learning. Their introduction to the academy has been incredibly positive and they have settled quickly into academy life. Year 6 students experienced a wide range of subjects and have made new friendships which will hopefully provide them with confidence for a successful start September. As a year group their conduct has been exemplary and we look forward to welcoming them back in September.

BIE Awards

On Friday 8th July, the United Learning schools award ceremony was held at the Royal Armouries Museum in Leeds. This awards evening recognises and rewards young people and staff from across the country. The awards celebrate the ethos of ambition: confidence; creativity; determination; enthusiasm; respect, and those who most embody these qualities. Hundreds of worthy nominees are selected by their schools and the awards are given to those that have achieved the most, made the greatest progress and inspired others.  Out of the hundreds of nominees, two of our students won an award for the Independent Learning and Resilience category. Robbie Brown the year 10-13 award and Kenzie Doman won the year 7-9 award. Both students were a credit to the academy and it was a pleasure to see the two young people accept their well-deserved award.

It has proven to be a very good year for fundraising at Sheffield Springs Academy,  our dedicated fund raising team,  led by Armani D’Arcy, Ellie Moult and Kelsie Stevenson have helped raise over £1700 for charity. This amount includes money raised by Mason Butler and his team taking part in a sponsored row (using rowing machines, they rowed the equivalent distance between Dover & Calais in just 1 hour) to raise money for Cancer Research.  Charites sponsored by Sheffield Springs Academy this year are; Remembrance Day, Macmillan Cancer Care, Children in Need, Sheffield Children’s Hospital, Water Aid and Teenage Cancer Trust.  See our website for more information.

Springs Stars Awards

A new academic awards system which has been developed by the student council had the presentation of its first annual awards on Thursday 7th July 2016. This recognised the achievement of students in each subject area for each year group and also celebrated an overall Academic Champion for each year. The evening was a great success with well over forty students receiving their awards in front of very proud guests. Throughout the year more than 42% of all students in the academy have had their efforts recognised by this scheme which is helping to raise aspirations and celebrate success in learning.

Student Leadership

We are committed to involving our students in the development and improvement of this academy. We make it clear that they do have a voice and that we do value and act upon their ideas. On Monday 27th June 2016, thirty two Student Leaders from year 10 and thirty Student Council members were fortunate enough to be involved in a day of Student Leadership Development, this was provided in school by a specialist external agency. The training covered issues such as, making a contribution to school improvement, being a positive role model, communicating with confidence and playing an effective part in meetings. All those involved were very positive about their experience and the course providers were very complimentary about our students.
