Dear Parents and Carers

Year 11 Information

Yesterday Y11 received their externally moderated examination results and personal learning checklists.  With only 70 school days left until the start of their GCSE examinations it is essential that students learn important lessons from these results as to how they can improve their grades in the summer examination series.  The personal learning checklist directs them to the appropriate revision and intervention sessions which run on Mondays, Thursdays and Fridays every week.  During February half term many curriculum areas will be providing additional support sessions for Y11, further details will be provided nearer the time.

Y11 Parents Evening will take place on Thursday 22nd January. The evening will run from 4:00pm until 6:30pm and will provide a timely and very important opportunity to discuss your child’s progress and identify the actions that need to take place from now onwards in the build up to the summer examinations.  Pie and peas will be available to attendees in the dining room.

Year 9 Information

Thank you to the parents/carers who attended the Guided Pathways meeting on Wednesday evening.  Further information will be available during the Y9 parents evening which will take place on Thursday 29th January.   Parents will also be able to schedule a meeting during this event to discuss their son/daughters guided pathway.

As you will be aware we now expect all students to arrive at the Academy for no later than 8:35am. Students have made a positive start with this new expectation and the vast majority are meeting our expectations. Please ensure your child arrives on time, in correct uniform and with the right equipment for the day ahead.

The focus on assemblies this week has been on attendance.  We expect 100% attendance from all our students for the academic year. During the assemblies we launched our attendance leagues. Form groups have been divided into three leagues and students will work as a team in their tutor group to try and finish as high as possible in their league.  The leagues will be reviewed each half term.  Please ask your child for further details as we hope they will be excited by this new initiative and the exciting prizes on offer.

Learning Resource Centre

We have a number of avid readers at Sheffield Springs Academy and our Learning Resource Centre is well-used.  In order to ensure the range of books on offer is varied and plentiful, we are seeking your support to ensure that overdue books are returned to the Academy.  Some books have been on-loan for a considerable period.  There will be a Book Amnesty next week during which any students who return books to the LRC will be awarded 10 Vivos.  Students who have overdue books have had reminders from form tutors and English teachers this week.  Thank you in anticipation of your support.

Primary Events

On Tuesday evening we welcomed primary colleagues to the launch of the common calculations policy.  Sheffield Springs Academy and other schools within the family have collaborated to design a strategy to benefit our students.  It will mean that all our students within the locality share a common understanding, knowledge and experience of mathematics.  We will launch this to our Y7 students shortly and all Y7 parents will receive a policy through the post.  Should you have any further questions please contact the maths department.

Food Bank

In order to support families in crisis, a food bank has been created here at the Academy.  Staff were asked to donate any spare essential food items, the response has been overwhelming.   We would now like to raise the profile of our food bank with your support.  If you are able to donate, please provide essential items such as; milk (UHT or powdered), sugar, fruit juice (cartons), soup, pasta sauces, sponge pudding (tinned), tomatoes (tinned), cereals, rice pudding (tinned), tea bags/instant coffee, instant mash potato, rice/pasta, tinned meat/fish, tinned fruit, jam, biscuits or snack bar.

Your child can deliver items to the Academy shop during opening times (before school, break and at lunch time).  More information will follow on how to access this service once it is established.

Last Thursday the Y8 netball team had a late fixture against Sheffield Park Academy.  Down in numbers due to illness we set off to face a team with an unbeaten record.  As the four quarters went on we gained in confidence and found we had a good chance of winning!  We went into the last quarter two points down.  The girls pulled together and we eventually beat Park Academy 10-8.  The game was of a very high standard, fast and very physical but our girls stood the test.  Well done to Sophie Fiddell, Georgia Evans, Eliza Pearson, Saraya Goring, Courtney Penney, Nkosi Dube, Holly Akers and Georgia Evans.

On Tuesday we took a group of Y7 and Y8 students to Hillsborough to compete in the Sportshall Athletics School Sports Games.  They competed with determination and represented the school brilliantly – well done to all involved.
