Sheffield Springs Students Rally Round to Help the Homeless

The students took on the staff at Sheffield Springs for a trio of challenges, all aimed at raising funds for the homeless.

As part of the Diana Award Mentoring Programme, those students taking part were tasked with delivering a social action project, choosing to lend their support to Roundabout - a Sheffield based charity which provides shelter, support and life skills to young people aged 16-24 who are homeless or at risk of homelessness.

The students ran three staff vs student challenges -  an eating contest, a game of ‘Moonball’ and a penalty shootout, with fellow students paying to watch or take part. The activities helped raise over £50 for the Roundabout, whose representative Clare came into school to speak to those who took part and thank them for their efforts.

Commented Sheffield Springs Academy’s Head of School Mark Shipman:

“As a school at the heart of its community, Sheffield Springs has always been very active in its support for local charities. This latest initiative not only helps to demonstrate that, but has also helped those who involved develop new skills and gain a greater appreciation and understanding for those less fortunate than themselves.”

The Diana Award

The Diana Award was established in 1999 by the British Government who wanted continue Princess Diana’s legacy by establishing a formal way to recognise young people who were going above and beyond the expected in their local communities.

In 2006 the organisation became an independent charity, which enabled it to develop into a fully-fledged youth-led movement. Five years later it launched its now world famous Anti-Bullying Programme and later, in 2012, its Mentoring Programme
