Sheffield Springs Academy Rises to the Rock Challenge

Sheffield Springs Academy have risen to the ‘Rock Challenge,’ with top spot in the regional finals of a prestigious performance driven competition.

Held on Friday 9th March at Magna Science Adventure Centre, Rotherham, the event saw the academy up against schools from across the North of England (including fellow United Learning school Barnsley Academy, who came second), each tasked with producing a short piece reflecting the personalities, concerns, hopes, dreams and interests of those taking part.

Rock Challenge itself is a series of performing arts events promoting healthy life choices. Supported by the Be Your Best Foundation, the annual event sees thousands of young people take part in three regional finals (Scottish, Northern and Southern), culminating in a grand UK National Final held in the summer.

Under the competition, teams of up to 100 performers, stage and support crew create their own dance-drama production, as well as making their own props and costumes and selecting/recording the music for their supporting soundtrack.

On Friday, the 26 strong team from Sheffield Springs Academy won the judges over with their production, entitled Underground, based around the miner’s strike of 1984, taking first prize in the regional final. The academy also received awards of excellence for choreography, visual enhancement, concept, set design and function, stage use, stage crew, performance skill and drama.

Commented Sheffield Springs Academy’s Head of School Mark Shipman:

We are extremely proud of all the students that took part, who all worked extremely hard over a relatively short space of time to ensure the performance piece was competition ready. They definitely rose to the challenge both on and off stage and were an absolute credit to both the academy and themselves – well done all!”
