Year 10 students Kelly Chan and Jack Fowell from Sheffield Springs Academy have been announced as the winners of United Learning’s annual Christmas card design challenge.
The competition, which is open to all of the Group’s schools – including primary and secondary, independent and state academy – attracts a significant number of entries each year. This year saw over 80 of the very best entries from 26 of our schools, highlighting the breadth of talent across the Group.
Kelly and Jack’s winning design was selected by United Learning’s Chief Executive Jon Coles and depicts shepherds following a star. The artwork was the result of Kelly and Jack’s impressive teamwork skills and strong artistic abilities – combining different media to create the finished effect.
The winning students’ design will feature on the Group’s Christmas card this winter. As a reward for their efforts, Kelly and Jack will also receive a £10 book voucher and cards to share with their friends and family.
On winning the competition, Kelly Chan and Jack Fowell said:
“When we found out we had won we were ecstatic as we worked very hard on our creation. We chose the design because we liked the contrast between the black and the vibrant blue background. We decided to add the trees either side to frame the whole piece and then added the star in the middle to draw in people’s attention.
Their art teacher at Sheffield Springs Academy, Danielle Finlay, added:
“I was delighted to hear that Kelly and Jack had won as they are committed and conscientious students. They worked effectively as a team and assigned each other tasks to suit their strengths, experimenting with a range of materials before settling on the final outcome.”
