Principal’s Letter - Monday 20th October 2014

Dear Parents and Carers

Ofsted Inspection: Sheffield Springs Academy Out of Special Measures!

I am writing to you to share the very good news that on their recent visit, Ofsted judged that we no longer require Special Measures.  I have enclosed a full report from Ofsted which also can be viewed on our website from Wednesday.

This news is very encouraging for us all as it demonstrates that the changes we have all worked hard to introduce into the Academy are proving to be successful.  The removal of Special Measures is not easy and Ofsted only recommend it when they are confident that the improvements in place are secure and permanent and that the future of the school is secure.

Throughout the inspection, Ofsted were impressed by the hard work, commitment and dedication of our students and staff.  In particular, they recognised the “positive culture” that now exists across the Academy and that we have in place “enough good and outstanding practice to drive improvement”.  They share our confidence that standards at Key Stage 4 will improve in 2015/2016 and beyond, they are impressed by the strong improvements in the quality of teaching and the changes to the curriculum which are helping to raise students’ aspirations and ambition.

As a parent, I hope that you will be pleased with the many positive comments that the Inspectors made about your children, in particular they said:

  • Our students are “polite and show respect for one another”

  • Our students are “increasingly proud of their school”

  • Good progress is being made by our most able students and across the academy at KS3

  • Our Sixth Form students are “good role models for other students”

  • There are “notable success stories and good support for particularly vulnerable students which is resulting in good academic progress”

  • Our students “implicitly trust teachers to deal with issues which concern them”

  • Our students’ “behaviour at social time is much improved”

We know that as an Academy we still have a distance to travel and some key areas to improve.  Ofsted have identified a number of areas that still require improvement.  However, I hope you agree that today’s news is incredibly encouraging and provides evidence that we are moving in the right direction.

I would like to thank all students, parents, staff and Governors for their hard work and dedication over the past 2 years.  This is an important judgment for Sheffield Springs Academy and our wider community and I am delighted that our combined hard work has been recognised by Ofsted.

We look forward to continuing this journey after half term and into the future.

Yours sincerely

Russell Heritage
