Principal’s Letter Friday 7th February 2014

Dear Parents and Carers

As a reminder, the last day of this half term for students is Thursday 20th February.  Friday 21st February is an INSET day for staff.  Students and staff will return on Monday 3rd March.

Next week sees the launch of our “Respect Campaign”.  The aim is for students to recognise and develop respect for self, others and the environment through rewarding examples of good manners and polite responsible behaviour ie saying please and thank you, holding open doors for others, picking up litter etc.  Staff will reward students with a raffle ticket entering them into a prize draw.

On Monday 3rd February a number of Y7 students took part in the Links Pom Dance competition.  All students worked hard to prepare their routine. They represented the Academy well and performed with energy and enthusiasm.  Well done and thank you to the Y12 dance students who led the Y7s in preparation for the competition.

Last year a number of Y11 students took part in an acting project with Sheffield Museums.  They worked with professional writers to write and record scripts which have been put to animation.  This animation now forms part of the WW1 exhibition at Weston Park Museum, students are attending a preview of the animations next week.  Congratulations to; James Hibberd, Olivia Winterbottom, Elizabeth Bell, Georgia Stubbs, Demiel Sedgwick, Emily Kitteringham, Eve Osbourne, Bailey Hunter and Carl Donoghue.

We would like to reiterate that students are not allowed to leave the premises at lunch time.  We have had a number of incidents involving students who have left the Academy at lunch times.  We have a duty of care to ensure all students are safe and supervised on site.  Students can dine in the Academy dining room (menus have recently been updated taking into consideration the comments of students) or bring a packed lunch.  I am sure you will appreciate the safeguarding implications this can have and we welcome your support.

We are continuing to tackle incidents of poor behaviour and sanction students who do not conform to expectations.  We are constantly reinforcing our 5 core principles:

  • All students to make good or better progress

  • No child left behind

  • All teachers to deliver good or better learning

  • Every individual or group moves to the next level of successful performance

  • Everyone to conduct themselves in a respectful and dignified manner
