Principal’s Letter - Friday 2nd May 2014

Dear Parents and Carers

I would like to take this opportunity to welcome back staff and students to what has proved to be a positive start to the new term.  Particularly Y7 students who on Monday achieved 100% attendance to school.  As you will be aware from previous letters this is not the first time this has happened. For all students to be present all day is a great achievement and by way of recognition all Y7 students will be rewarded next week.

This is a very important time for students in Y11, Y12 and Y13, your support during this critical time is essential and I would like to thank you in advance.  These students should be aiming for 100% attendance between now and the examinations.

Traffic calming and a zebra crossing have now been successfully installed at the junction where Hurlfield Road meets East Bank Road.  We would welcome your support in reiterating the importance of road safety and encouraging your son/daughter to use this.

On Tuesday night 8 of our Y9 students took part in the Y9 Vision for Education 5-a-Side Football Competition.  The team accumulated the most points out of every team during the group stages beating Tapton, King Ecgberts and High Storrs en route to the semi-final.  During the semi-final, the team were very close to winning, sadly they lost during extra time.  All the students were a credit to the Academy and really did deserve to win the competition.  Well done;

Sam Goodall, Jack Charlesworth, Daniel Lee, Kai Williams, Asa Wilcox, Harrison Ross, Kyle Blake, Tyler Fiddler.

Last weekend, one of our Y8 students, Jonathan Buxton organised a Charity event and raised £1000 for the Children’s Heart Surgery fund.  Jonathan is himself waiting to be admitted to Leeds Hospital for open heart surgery.  Well done James for your efforts and on behalf staff and students at Sheffield Springs Academy we wish you well for the future.

During the final week of term 23 Y10 students completed their Duke of Edinburgh bronze expeditions and 14 Y11 students completed their silver expeditions.  As ever the expeditions cannot take place without staff support, thank you to Mr Thornhill, Mr Nelis, Mrs Jackson, Mrs Brice, Mr Joel and Miss Blakeway.  I would also like to make particular reference to the efforts of Mr Tazzyman, who as you will be aware was not only our Attendance Manager but also coordinator of the Duke of Edinburgh scheme.  Mr Tazzyman has left us, but, we are delighted to confirm the Duke of Edinburgh scheme will continue, as will the outstanding work of our Attendance Team.

Congratulations also to this week’s “Stars of the Week”, the following students were presented with certificates for displaying particularly high levels of commitment to their learning and showing exemplary attitude:

The Friends of Sheffield Springs Academy (FOSSA) group (formerly the PTA) is holding a table top sale on Saturday 10th May to help raise money which will benefit the students of the Academy.  We hope you can give your support to their fund raising activities.  If you don’t want to sell items you could still support by way of attending FOSSA events. Just by going along and simply buying refreshments makes such a difference.  FOSSA look forward to welcoming you to the sale.
