Principal’s Letter - Friday 28th November 2014

Dear Parents and Carers

The externally moderated exams got off to a good start this week with Y11 students conducting themselves in a positive manner.

As we approach December, should we need to close the Academy due to bad weather before the start of the day, this information will be displayed on both the Academy and Sheffield City Council websites, broadcast on Hallam FM and a text message will be sent to the person listed as number one priority contact.  Should the decision be made to close the Academy during the school day, again, the above methods of communication will be used.  In order to ensure the above process can run smoothly, please contact the Main Office if you have changed your mobile phone number.

We would like to remind parents and students about the importance of good attendance to school. We expect each student to have a minimum of 95% attendance as research indicates that this supports students in making good progress with their learning.  Please discuss with your child their current level of attendance and how you can work with the school to ensure that they meet our minimum requirements.

Students are expected to be in their form classroom for 8.40am each day.  This ensures that all receive a prompt, purposeful and consistent start to the day.  Students who are late without good reason are set a detention for the same day after school.  We would like to thank parents for their support with this matter.  The number of students arriving late to school has fallen considerably.

The Academy welcomes your support with developing an “ethos of consistency” towards standards and expectations.  We ask that you support the Academy policies regarding the following:

Students should only wear black shoes.

Students who arrive without correct footwear to the Academy with or without a note regarding footwear will be expected to loan a pair from the consequence room.

Students who refuse to comply with staff instructions will be placed in the consequence room/C16.  Students will remain there for the day including break and lunch.

Late to Learning

It is imperative that all students arrive to lessons on time.  Staff will complete registers in the first 5 minutes.  Students who arrive late will be sanctioned.

Mobile Phones and Electronic Devices

Mobile phones should not be visible in the Academy.  This also includes earphones.  Visible mobile phones/earphones will be confiscated until the end of the day.

Consuming Food around the Academy

With a large investment in bins and recent assemblies on the environment, we ask that students only eat in specified areas.  Food should only be consumed in the dining hall/main hall.  We also ask that students do not bring chewing gum.

Last Thursday, via Sheffield Hallam University, a representative from Venture Matrix, worked with a group of students participating in the BiG Challenge 8. Students learned about marketing and advertising and spent time thinking about how their business product could be marketed as well as considering how they could have maximum impact at any of the forthcoming trade events for BiG Challenge teams. We look forward to welcoming back Venture Matrix in the near future.
