News and Events at Sheffield Springs Academy

Principal’s Letter Friday 18th October 2013

Dear Parents and Carers

I would like to remind you of important dates for your diary:

Thursday 24th October: Last day for students.

Friday 25th October: INSET day for staff.  Academy closed to students.

Monday 28th October – Friday 1st November: Half Term.

Monday 4th November: First day back for all.

As of Monday 21st October, due to health and safety considerations, “scooters” (of any type) will be completely banned from the Academy. I welcome your support on the matter.

Year 7 parents will be aware that as part of the Springs Board curriculum we will be holding our first show and tell evening “Time to Shine” this year. This is a new exciting event designed to celebrate the work of students on the journey from Year 6 to Year 7. Students and staff are working tremendously hard to ensure that this will be a success. The initial event was due to take place on Thursday 24th October however it has been postponed to Wednesday 27th November with a start time of 6pm.  This is to allow for extra preparation time.  All parents and carers of students in Year 7 will receive invitations shortly.  We hope that this does not cause any inconvenience and that the showcase event on 27th November will be well supported.

Yesterday we opened our “Dragons Den” to the semi-finalists of our Big Challenge selection.  Our “Dragons” were all well respected Businessmen and women from across the city.  This year the standard of our student’s business ideas and presentations were exceptionally high giving the Dragons a difficult job making their decisions on which teams to put through to the Big Challenge 7 competition.  I am delighted to announce the six business teams the Academy will be supporting are: Choc Bloc, Picture Perfect Postcards, Super Soaps, CE Creations, Subarashii Games and Perfectionary together with  two on-going businesses from last year Cams Jams and Candle Creations.  Well done to all teams who submitted a business proposal, to those who presented yesterday, to the Dragons for giving up their time and huge congratulations to the 8 teams who have been put through.

October has been a busy month for Mr Tazzyman with the Duke of Edinburgh Award.  28 students basked in the sunshine and completed their bronze practise expedition.  In stark contrast 17 students were wet and windswept in the Peak District last weekend to complete their practise expedition.  As ever the expeditions could not have taken place without the help of staff members giving up their time to assist in these worthwhile trips, particular thanks to Mr Dowcett, Miss Blakeway, Mr Thornhill, Mrs Brice and Mrs Jackson have all contributed to the expeditions.

The vast majority of students continue to collect rewards points.  Please encourage your son/daughter to use their rewards points to purchase items from the Academy Shop.  We have a wide selection of items ranging from stationary to reward trips.  The upcoming trips involve Ice Skating and Bowling on Tuesday 17th December.  Students need to log into their VIVO Account and purchase one of the trips for either 250 points or 500 points the latter meaning a student will go for FREE!  For assistance with logging into their VIVO Account they will need to speak to their Form Tutor.

Congratulations to this week’s “Stars of the Week”, the following students will be presented with certificates for displaying particularly high levels of commitment to their learning and showing exemplary attitude:
