Principal’s Letter - Friday 16th May 2014

Dear Parents and Carers

The last day of half term 5 is Friday 23rd May.  Students and staff will return on Monday 2nd June.  Details of sessions for Y11 students taking part during the half term break will be communicated separately.

At Sheffield Springs Academy expectations and standards remain high. Staff carry out daily checks and attempt to work with all students to ensure that they are fully equipped and ready for learning. Young people attending learning without being fully equipped unfortunately disrupt the start of lessons for both themselves and fellow students.  Equipment can be purchased using VIVOs through the Academy Shop.  I would like to thank you in advance for your support in ensuring that all students leave home every day fully equipped and ready to learn.

We would like to remind you that mobile phones (and ear phones) are not permitted in the Academy.  These items will be confiscated until the end of the day should any student fail to comply.

We would also like to take this opportunity to reiterate our uniform policy; all students should arrive at the Academy wearing a blazer, shirt – buttoned up to the top, tie, black trousers or skirt (knee length) and black shoes.  Our students look incredibly smart when they comply with these expectations and we welcome your support.

On Friday 9th May our Y7 students celebrated their two days of 100% attendance with a rewards afternoon. Student’s behaviour was exemplary all afternoon and they celebrated their achievements together.  The afternoon was well deserved in recognition of the fantastic way in which they have adapted to life at the Academy.

On Tuesday 13th May, 52 Y11 students attended the Octagon in Sheffield to receive Sheffield University Achievement Awards. These awards are given to those students with good attendance, a positive attitude to learning and for taking responsibility in planning their own futures.  Students attended with parents and carers who were bursting with pride.  The students were a credit to the Academy as well as their families as their behaviour, attitude and uniform were all perfect.  It was lovely to see the students gain recognition as they have constantly shown themselves to be polite, mature and eager to learn.  It is a testament to the year group that there were so many of them there to receive the award. Well done Y 11, you have worked hard and deserve every success in the future.

Last night the achievements of Y10 were celebrated.  The evening was a great success and well supported by staff and parents. As always, we would like to congratulate those students who were invited to collect a trophy and certificate in recognition of their consistent commitment and approach towards their learning at the Academy.

On Wednesday 21st May Y7 parents evening will take place 4pm- 6.30pm.  We would like to remind parents that appointments can be made at http://sheffieldsprings.parentseveningsystem.co.uk/ or by following the link on our Academy home page http://www.sheffieldsprings-academy.org/. If you are unable to access the internet please contact main reception where our staff will be happy to book appointments on your behalf.  Appointments with each member of staff will last for five minutes.  Staff on the evening will be seeing a large number of parents, we would be grateful if you could ensure you keep to your appointment times.

On Monday 9th June, all our Y7 students will take part in a sponsored walk/jog.  All money raised will go to this year’s identified charities; Sheffield Children’s Hospital, Macmillan Nurses and Oxfam.  If you have a child in Y7, please encourage them to take part, sponsor sheets will be issued shortly.

FOSSA would like to thank all those who supported the table top sale which took place on Saturday 10th May, giving special mention to students Grace Hustler, Laura Jones and Nabeela Mowlana for making some delicious cakes and buns.  The sale raised over £150 which will go towards benefiting students of the Academy.  Winners of the raffle and games have been notified directly.
