Duke of Edinburgh Bronze Award Expedition
On 23rd September, 28 students and 4 members of staff set off for this year’s Duke of Edinburgh Bronze Award practice expedition. The expedition was over two days with the students and staff spending two nights in their tents (a new experience for some of the recruits). The challenge over the two days included walking for six hours, working in teams to erect tents, navigating themselves around and cooking their own food. For one new recruit this included steak sandwiches for breakfast, cooked in olive oil and rosemary (perhaps a budding chef in our midst). The team stayed at the Silverwood scout camp near Barnsley and during one of their walks they visited Cannon Hall, a popular visitors’ attraction.
To gain their full bronze award students will have to complete 3 other activities:
- Service/volunteering: helping to provide a service without pay e.g. babysitting or fundraising.
- Physical Recreation: Taking part in some kind of sporting activity e.g. Wii fit, football, badminton, walking.
- Skill: Learning a new skill e.g. reading, gardening, decorating.
