Introduction by Chair of Governors - Christine Goldsack

Hello, my name is Christine Goldsack and I am Chairperson of the Local Governing Body (LGB) at Sheffield Springs Academy. I hope to provide you with an insight into the role and responsibilities of the LGB within the Academy. In this question and answer session I would like to detail my role as chair of Governors and introduce fellow members of the Governing Body.

What is the purpose of the LGB?

The LGB together with the Principal sets out specific Academy policies in key areas. These are established within the framework policies and guidelines determined by UCST in the group policy statements by reflect the specific needs and circumstances of the Academy within its own locality and community. The LGB also acts as a ‘critical friend’ to the Principal and to the Academy.

How is the Chair person elected?

The Chairperson of the LGB is elected or re-elected by the LGB and his/her appointment is approved by the United Church School Trust (UCST) Board.

What are the responsibilities of the Chair person?

The Chairperson of the LGB is a key component in the successful governance of UCST. The Chairperson acts in support of the Principal and has direct access to the Chief Executive and to the Chairperson of the Board. They also report relevant matters and non-confidential decisions from the Board to LGBs and vice versa. As Chairperson I chair the LGB meetings, and ensure that the organisation and membership of that body meets the needs of the school. The Chairperson is also a member of the appraisal panel for the Principal.

Who sits on the LGB?

Members of the local community including parents, Business Professionals and staff representatives make up the team of 14 Governors, current members are:

How often does the LGB meet?

The LGB meets at least each term, with further meetings taking place throughout the year with individual Governors, each having links with each Curriculum Area.
