Dance
The Dance Department consists of 2 members of staff, C White and H Kay, both of whom are dance trained and specialists in the subject and can therefore deliver effective and enjoyable lessons.
The Dance Department make full use of the fantastic facilities by putting on many dance performances to showcase students' work.
KS3 Curriculum
All students take part in dance lessons during KS3. Over the 2 years students work on many different topics such as Street Dance, West Side Story, Bullying, Body Actions, Stomp, Capoeira to name but a few. All these topics include creative and performance skills which together develop self-esteem, co-ordination, physical skills and confidence. Students experience working in pairs, small groups and whole groups, developing communication, problem solving and team work skills.
In Y8, students work towards the Bronze level Arts Award.
KS4 Curriculum
At KS4 students work towards a BTEC First in Performing Arts: Dance. During this course, students study units such as Performing Dance, Contemporary Dance and the Development of Dance. By completing these units students will develop a greater understanding of Dance as an art form and the dance industry. Students improve physical skills through technique classes and rehearsals, which they then demonstrate in a range of performance pieces that they perform to an audience. Students will also experience choreographic techniques in many workshops to help them choreograph their own solos and group dances.
This course develops many dance skills but also improves self-esteem, communication, team work and appreciation.
KS5 Curriculum
At KS5 students study a BTEC National in Performing Arts. This course enables dance students to further develop their technique, performance skills, choreography and appreciation through more advanced and challenging assignments.
They also gain an insight into the dance profession and the requirements for progression on to university and into the dance industry.
The Dance Department offer dance clubs at lunch times and after school and encourages everybody to take part. For information on Dance clubs please see a member of the Dance department.
Dance also plays a key part in the annual school musical. This gives students another opportunity to showcase their skills.
Last year’s Y11 achieved 100% A*-C for their BTEC First qualification with 4 students achieving A*.
