Media

The mass media is one of the work-changing phenomena of the last 100 years.  In Britain it is almost impossible to avoid:  TV or radio in every room in the house, home computers connected to the internet, magazines and newpapers on the doormat, posters on the local bus shelter advertising the latest movies at the local multiplex...

In media Studies we assess and analyse a range of different media products, across the worlds of radio, TV, film, new media and print.  We investigate the larger businesses responsible for giving us our daily media fix, and the nature of media comsumption by different audiences.

Students can access a range of resources through the Media VLE.  This includes assignment briefs, media resources, literacy information, homework schedules and electronic workbooks.

For media production work, you will have access to

  •  35mm/digital camers for still images, scanners, printers and computers
  •  ICT hardware facilities and DTP and/or digital image manipulation software/web design software
  •  Audio recording and editing facilities/Sound Studio
  •  Video or recording and editing facilities

KS3 Curriculum
In year 9, students are introduced to the key media concepts and assessment objectives.  Students will explore media technologies and gain analytical, production, and evaluative skills in preparation for the start of their course in Y10.

KS4 Curriculum
Sheffield Springs Academy runs both BTEC Media Studies and GCSE Media Studies courses.  In these courses we explore how the media tries to manipulate its audience through the use of particular kinds of language, and learn to use those tools for ourselves in producing our own original media products.  Media Studies is part sociology, part psychology, with a smattering of art, economics, politics and business studies thrown in for good measure.

KS5 Curriculum

What can it lead to?

This course can lead to progression in studying Media Studies in Higher Education.  It will also count towards your UCAS points.

This qualification could also help with career prospects in related fields.

Media Studies naturally leads to careers in media production, journalism, marketing, advertising or public relations.  But an awareness of how the world of media works can also support other careers, such as social work, law, medicine and education.  By knowing how the media operates you will be able to decode messages more skillfully, and engage with topics that interest you....
