The music department is extremely well resourced with two full classrooms, each housing a suite of 16 Apple Mac computers. There are 3 new upright Yamaha pianos, a Yamaha C10 grand piano in the main music room and full size Yamaha CS111 concert grand housed in the main hall. The recording studio is the hub of the department and is crammed with state of the art technology capable of recording 24 tracks from all the main rooms in the department.
Over 70 students take instrumental lessons with our team of instrumental teachers and we are currently developing our choir and fledgling orchestra. We also have a number of rock groups who rehearse at various times and lots of active solo singers.
Many students take graded examinations with the Victoria College here at Sheffield Springs. Sheffield Springs is the local base for Victoria College and students come from the region to take their grade exams here.
KS3 curriculum
The curriculum at KS3 covers a wide range of topics including music for film, music from around the world and elements of music. Students perform, compose and listen to a variety of styles.
KS4 curriculum
The curriculum at KS4 consists of music at GCSE and expressive arts. In expressive arts, students combine film and music creating pop videos and animations for their coursework.
KS5 curriculum
At KS5, students take AS and A2 level music, AS & A2 level music technology and level 2 BTEC diploma in the music industry. These qualifications offer students a wide range of options whether they wish to pursue an academic route or a vocational route.
Specialism
The music department contributes a great deal to our specialism in the Performing Arts with Business and Enerprise. Each year we rehearse the music from our annual productions, most recently High School Musical and Grease. We also prepare for the annual Christmas event or Carol Service as well as presenting a number of smaller performances.
