Principal’s Summer Letter - August 2014

Dear Parents and Carers

As you are aware from my final weekly letter of the last academic year we will continue to do all we can to ensure that the Academy continues to move forward to support all our young people to make good progress.  2014/2015 will be the most important year in recent history of the Academy.  We anticipate an Ofsted inspection early in the term and hopefully the outcome will reflect the improvements made by all. With this in mind, we would like to provide you with information that will ensure your child has a really good start to the next academic year.  We can confirm that Sheffield Springs Academy has successfully recruited some very experienced staff.  As such, we are fully staffed and looking forward to welcoming our young people on Tuesday 2nd September 2014.

NEW ACADEMIC YEAR

Sheffield Springs Academy will reopen to students on Tuesday 2nd September as follows:

Y7 – Gates open at 8am for an 8:40am start

Y8 to Y11 – Gates open at 9:15am for a 9:30am start

From Wednesday 3rd September – Gates will be open to all students from 8am in readiness for the 8:40am start

The term begins for Post 16 students on Tuesday 2nd September.  We will welcome back our Y13 students at 9:00am to spend the morning focusing on the next stage of their education and working with Sheffield Hallam University.  Our new Y12 students will join us at 1:00pm for a welcome and registration into the 6th Form.  On Wednesday, both Y12 and Y13 students will take part in a team building day at Rother Valley Country Park.

UNIFORM

Enclosed in this pack is a copy of the Uniform Policy.  I am pleased to say that there has been a good response from the majority of students in relation to this.  I would however, like to clarify a number of potential ‘grey’ areas:

Girls Trousers    These must be tailored in style without large buckles. Tight trousers and leggings are not permitted.

Shoes                    Students must wear plain black shoes, this does not include trainers, canvas shoes or shoes which have logos.

Earrings                One pair of plain gold-type or silver-type earrings may be worn in the ears, no coloured or diamante-style earrings will be permitted. Please do not allow your child to have additional piercings as these are not allowed.

Hair                        Extreme dying of hair, for example, red, multi-coloured etc, patterns cut into the hair or any style that bring undue attention to the student (as determined by the school) is not permitted.

Nails                      Nail extensions and nail varnish are not permitted.

Behaviour for Learning

I would like to take this opportunity to thank you for your continued support in ensuring that our young people are aware of and cooperate with the Behaviour for Learning Policy.  The Policy is available on our website.

EQUIPMENT

It is important that all students are ready for learning.  Please ensure your son/daughter has the basic necessary equipment:

Bag

Pen – black or blue

Pencil

Ruler

Pencil Case

Calculator

PE kit

ATTENDANCE

We would like to draw your attention to the attendance information sheet included in this pack.  Attendance and punctuality remains a priority for the Academy.  Whilst we expect all students to aspire to achieve 100% attendance, the minimum we expect is 95%.  Generally, as a rule, a 5% drop in attendance means a drop of one GCSE grade or national curriculum level.  We would like to thank parents for their support in ensuring that students arrive on time to school.  This has significantly improved.  We would like to remind you that we expect all students to be at the Academy for 8:30am each day ready to start learning.

Planners

All students will be issued with a planner at the start of the year and another in February (2 in total for the academic year).  The planner will contain useful information and will also be where students will record their extended learning tasks.  We ask that you review your child’s planner every day.  The school planner is a compulsory piece of equipment for all students and will act as their “passport” in order to access privileges in school.  It will not be acceptable for students to leave their planner at home as they will lose various entitlements, for example, with no planner, students will be last in the queue at breaks and lunchtimes.  Lost planners will be charged at £3:00.

REWARDS

Students will be able to gain rewards by collecting Approach to Learning Points and using them in the Academy Shop.  Students will also be able to purchase tickets to exciting trips which will be held on the following dates:

Term 1 reward = Thursday 18th December

Term 2 reward = Thursday 26th March

Term 3 reward = Thursday 16th July

LUNCHTIMES

In order to maintain the safety and well being of all our students, no students other than Sixth Form will be allowed to leave the premises at lunch time.  We have a duty of care to ensure all students are safe and supervised on site.  Students can dine in the Academy dining room (menus have been updated taking into consideration the comments of students) or bring a packed lunch.  We are sure you will appreciate the safeguarding implications this can have and welcome your support.
