Principal’s Letter - Thursday 18th September 2014

Dear Parents and Carers

INSET Day: Friday 19th September (the Academy will be closed to all students)

As we continue to focus on preparation for learning and ensuring students have the correct equipment, we would like to advise that whilst the majority of our young people attend with bags there are still a number of students without them.  It is important that all students have a bag to carry books, folders, revision guides and other resources.  We would be grateful if you could assist by ensuring your child has a bag (large enough to hold A4 documents).

As you are aware our website is available 24 hours a day to provide you with the most up to date news and details of events taking place at the Academy.  The website also contains important information together with all Academy policies for example e-safety and safeguarding.

Attendance of students continues to be above the national average for secondary schools.  All students should have their current attendance recorded in their planner, please look at this with your child and discuss the importance of attendance.

On Thursday 25th September we will be holding our annual Y5/6 open evening. If you have a son or daughter in Y5 or 6 we would urge you to attend this evening.  You will be given important information about the Academy, sample lessons and have an opportunity to meet our staff and some students.

We are delighted to announce that we have been selected to participate in a new and exciting enterprise challenge through the Sheffield Enterprise Pipeline.  Sheffield Enterprise Pipeline is a partnership of schools, colleges, Sheffield City Council, businesses and both The University of Sheffield and Sheffield Hallam University.  The project it is a social enterprise project that will link up local social enterprises with schools.  We will be working together with our first choice of social enterprise partner, Whirlow Hall Farm, giving our students real business challenges to engage with through Project Based Learning.  We will be identifying teams of students in the coming weeks to participate in the challenge which will provide opportunities for students to develop a wide range of work related and entrepreneurial skills.

The Modern Foreign Languages department set extended learning tasks each week.  In addition, it is expected that students will revise the key language from lessons by using their individual vocabulary books or by practising  the activities  on the Linguascope website. This site can be found at www.linguascope.com.
