Principal’s Letter - Monday 2nd February 2015

Dear Parents and Carers

GCSE League Tables and Local Press Coverage

You may have seen from the local media coverage that our GCSE performance last summer has shown a fall in performance from the previous year.

While this was disappointing, there has been a fall nationally and changes to the criteria of the league table did have an adverse effect on the Academy outcomes.  We continue to try to put everything in place to improve Sheffield Springs Academy and build confidence as a school that needs to be at the heart of the community that it serves.  As you know, despite these results, Ofsted removed us from special measures last term and have continued to have confidence in the steps we are taking to drive up standards.  This has been reaffirmed in their most recent visit earlier this month.  Our current Y11 students are working hard alongside staff and parents to achieve the best possible outcomes in the summer exams this year.  We are engaging a wide range of strategies to support all our students achieve their best.  We also continue to see improved attitudes and approach to learning from our younger students.  This is has been recognised by visitors to the school, parents and governors. I would like to thank you for your continued support and assure you that we will continue to do all we can to ensure that all students make good progress at Sheffield Springs Academy.

Year 11 Information

As you are aware, the Y11 parents evening will now take place on Wednesday 4th February 2015, from 4.00pm to 6.30pm.  Appointments made by students should still stand, however, students should check appointments with their subject teachers.

There are just 9 school days before Y11 will be sitting pre-public examinations (week commencing 23rd February 2014) in readiness for the final examination in the summer.  Please support your child by encouraging them to attend session 6 every Monday, Thursday and Friday as well as holiday sessions during February half term.

Year 9 Information

As you are aware, the Y9 parents evening will now take place on Thursday 12th February 2015, from 4.00pm to 6.30pm.  Appointments made by students will still stand, however, students should check appointments with their subject teachers.

Year 7 Information

All Y7 students have the opportunity, every fortnight to visit our excellent Learning Resource Centre (LRC).  During their lesson, students are encouraged to read a book and complete relevant work around the book they are reading.  This proves a great success with the majority of our students.  It has been suggested by some students that we run a sponsored read around this activity.  As such, from Monday 2nd February until the Easter Half term we will be doing just that.

The event will be run through form groups, with an inter-form competition for the most sponsors at the end of the event.  The charities the children have chosen this year are; St Lukes Hospice, the British Heart Foundation and World Wildlife Fund (WWF).  Sponsor forms will be available from form teachers and the LRC.  Please encourage your child to take part in this activity – they can raise money for good causes whilst doing something they enjoy!
