Principal’s Letter - Friday 9th May 2014

Dear Parents and Carers

Monday sees the start of the summer examination series for students in Y11, Y12 and Y13.  Students should be preparing themselves for these exams by attending the many extra support sessions available after 3pm and through effective revision at home.  All students have been issued with personal examination timetables and if there are any queries regarding examination dates and times please contact Neil Tulip; Exams Officer via main reception.  It is crucial that students are aware of start times and arrive in the Academy in plenty of time and with the correct equipment.

With only 2 school weeks to go before the GCSE English exam, the English Department are offering structured revision classes after school on Mondays and Wednesdays.  The sessions last for one hour and will give all students the chance to adequately prepare for the exam.   English teachers will be on-hand to help your child, please see the timetable at the foot of this letter.

Yesterday Edward Gould; Chairman of United Learning visited the Academy.  He toured the building, met some Y7 students and enjoyed a dance performance from “Chicago” by a group of Sixth Form students.  Mr Gould was impressed with how smart and articulate our students were and we look forward to welcoming him again in the future.

This week saw two more awards evenings take place at the Academy. On Tuesday Y8 students’ achievements were celebrated and on Thursday evening it was the turn of our Y9 students.  Both evenings were well supported by staff and parents. We would like to congratulate those students who were invited to collect a trophy and certificate in recognition of their consistent commitment and approach towards their learning at the Academy.

Recently Ross Barrows and Cameron Newton battled the elements and competed in an elite field for the chance to go to the South Yorkshire Championships.  Cameron took part in the Shot competition and came 4th, unfortunately not quite enough to get him through.  He then competed in the Javelin in which he came second and gained a place at the Championships.  Ross was competing in Triple Jump where he jumped a personal best of 11.85 and came first also securing a place at the South Yorkshire Championships, congratulations and well done to both.

On Wednesday 21st May between 4pm and 6.30pm we welcome Y7 parents to the Academy for parents evening. This is an important evening where parents will be able to discuss their child’s academic progress with their subject teachers. We would urge all Y7 students and their parents to attend. Parents of Y7 students will shortly receive a letter providing details about how to book appointments. This will be done via the internet and is a straight forward process. Should parents have any difficulties accessing the internet or encounter any problems when booking appointments please contact the Academy immediately.

The Friends of Sheffield Springs Academy (FOSSA) group (formerly the PTA) is holding a table top sale on Saturday 10th May to help raise money which will benefit the students of the Academy.  We hope you can give your support to their fund raising activities.  If you don’t want to sell items you could still support by way of attending FOSSA events. Just by going along and simply buying refreshments makes such a difference.  FOSSA look forward to welcoming you to the sale.
