Principal’s Letter - Friday 7th March 2014

Dear Parents and Carers

We trust you have all had an enjoyable, well deserved break.  We would like to welcome back staff and students to what has been a somewhat busy week.

Y10 parents evening will take place on Monday 24th March 4pm – 6:30pm, further details will be posted home.

This week has seen the start of the externally moderated exams for Y11 students.  It is important that all Y11 students attend fully prepared – good luck to all.

Inspirational speaker Bonita Norris was in attendance on Tuesday and spoke with Y7 and some Sixth Form Students.

Bonita was the youngest British woman to reach the summit of Mount Everest at the age of 22 in May 2010.  In 2012, Bonita returned to the Himalayas to attempt Mount Lhotse. She successfully summited on 30th May 2012, becoming the first British woman to do so.  Y7 students found the talk very inspiring.

The Y8 boy’s football team played another Sheffield Schools League fixture at Firth Park School on Wednesday evening.  A closely contested game ending in a 4-3 victory for Springs.

We have received some exciting news this week regarding the Big Challenge.  Candle Creations have got through to the next round of the competition, congratulations to Katie Bell and Melissa Rhodes.  The girls have been shortlisted to present their business in front of a judging panel of 5 local business men and women on Wednesday 19th March at the Creative Sheffield Office.  This is a great achievement as just 16 teams are shortlisted from over 200 teams with 12 progressing to the awards evening.

Before the half term break seven Y11 students attended a World War 1 exhibition at Weston Park Museum.  The students had written and performed poems which will now be on show alongside animation created by Sheffield Hallam University.  The exhibition is running for a year meaning their work will be seen by thousands of visitors visiting the museum.  Congratulations to all involved.

The next student reward trip is on Wednesday 9th April.  The rewards on offer are bowling or ice skating and are available to all students at a cost of 500 VIVO points.  Students must log into VIVO in order to purchase the trip.  The only additional cost will be the tram fare to and from the venues.
