Principal’s Letter - Friday 6th March 2015

Dear Parents and Carers,

Attendance

We would like to take this opportunity to remind you about our expectations for medical appointments. If possible, we ask you to arrange these for your child outside school hours. However where this is not possible, it will support your child if these appointments are made towards the start or the end of the school day. Students should return to school as soon as possible after their appointment unless there is a medical emergency.  They should bring a copy of the appointment letter/card to the attendance office.

Year 10

Y10 parents’ evening will take place on Thursday 19th March (4pm – 6pm), the electronic booking system is now live.  To book or view appointments, please use the following link http://www.sheffieldsprings-academy.org/Y10-Parents-Evening.  Complimentary pie and peas will be available on the evening.

Staying Safe Online

OoVoo is a free video chat and instant messaging application (app) for smart phones and tablet devices which allows video chat with groups of up to 12 people.  There have been reported incidents in Greater Manchester of serious misuse of this app which the police are dealing with.

Please speak with your child to ensure they stay safe online:

  1. Don’t post any personal information online – this includes your address, email address or mobile number.

  2. Remember that not everyone online is who they say there are.

  3. Think carefully before posting pictures or videos of yourself.  Once you’ve put a picture of yourself online anyone can see it and download it.  It’s not yours anymore.

  4. Keep your privacy settings as high as possible.

  5. Don’t befriend people you don’t know.

  6. Don’t meet up with people you’ve met online.  Speak to your parent or carer about people who suggest you meet them.

  7. Think carefully about what you are saying before you post something online.

  8. Respect other people’s views, even if you don’t agree with something someone else says, don’t be rude.

  9. Never give out your passwords.

  10. If you see something online that makes you feel uncomfortable, unsafe or worried, close down the app or website, turn off your phone/device and tell a trusted adult immediately.

Year 7 Cheerleading Workshop

We are in the process of launching a Y7 cheerleading squad as a result of the successes of the Y8 team. Should your son or daughter wish to be involved, they should speak to their form teacher and Mrs Humphries. Over the course of the coming week, we will be introducing a cheerleading workshop for all those interested.

Events

Well done to our Y12 performing arts students who entertained over 80 primary school children with their performance of “The cat in the hat”.  This performance took place on Thursday morning and was a formal assessment as part of their level 3 BTEC qualification.

Congratulations to the 12 dance students who performed at Leeds Town Hall on 26th February.  All students performed exceptionally well and although they did not place in the top 3 of the competition, we are extremely proud of their efforts and the way in which they conducted themselves.

Fundraising

Over the last couple of months, the fundraising team has been busy generating more money for their nominated charities.  This has included a cookie bake and sponsored read.  Their latest endeavour has been to support the Great Daffodil Appeal in aid of Marie Curie Cancer Care.  The Y7 volunteers, accompanied by our Sixth Form students, have been selling daffodil pin badges and raised over £100 for this worthy cause.  Well done to everyone involved and thank you to all who have donated.  Our next events will include Red Nose Day and an Easter raffle (Easter eggs donated by Tesco).
