Principal’s Letter - Friday 5th February 2016

Dear Parents and Carers,

Date for your Diary

All students return to the Academy on Monday 15th February

Uniform

As we return all students will be expected to attend the Academy complying with all aspects of the Academy's uniform policy. All students are required to attend with plain black trousers, white shirt, Academy tie, blazer and plain black shoes.  Any student who does not meet these standards will be expected to borrow uniform, this will include footwear.  Students who do not comply with these requests will complete a sanction in line with the behaviour for learning policy. The policy for sanctions is that we will not contact you if the sanction is up to 30 mins; however any sanction over 30 mins will prompt the sending of a text message to inform you. We value your support to ensure that high standards and compliance with expectations across the Academy are continuously met.

Attendance

I would like to take this opportunity to remind you of the importance of regular attendance to school.  Students are only able to achieve their potential if they attend school punctually and avoid missing lessons. We expect students to achieve 100% attendance and punctuality.  Individual school records prove that this is achievable. Please take some time to discuss with your child their current attendance and punctuality record and how if possible this can be improved towards the 100% target.  There are a number of students whose attendance is currently at this level and it's important that we congratulate these students as this is a fantastic effort.  The school day starts at 8.35am when the gates are locked and it is important students arrive on time and ready to learn.  If students arrive late without good reason then they will receive a 30 minute detention on the same day.

Planners

When students return to the Academy on Monday 15th February they will be given a new student planner which will support them until the end of the academic year. This is a useful learning resource.  Students are encouraged to use this in lessons, for example using the traffic lights to prove their understanding of learning. However it also an important communication tool between home and school. Please ask to see your child's planner on a regular basis. Question them about the work they are doing and what they need to focus on to make further progress. The planner will also detail extended learning that has been set by staff.

PE

Year 11 GCSE PE practical moderation day is on the 18th March.

Performing Arts

This year’s school production 'The Musicals Show' will be staged on Wednesday 9th and Thursday 10th March 2016 at 6pm. This is an exciting production showcasing extracts from four popular West End Musicals. Tickets will be on sale soon!

Sixth Form Success

Congratulations to Ameena Najib, one of our year 13 students, who has achieved the English qualification which will allow her to progress on to university.  She has worked really hard and earlier this month achieved the grade and has since received offers from her university choices. She received a round of applause from her fellow students which was well deserved.

Food Bank

The Food Bank is continuing to support families but we desperately need donations. There will be a collection this Friday and again on March 18th, Sport Relief day. We require tins, bottles and packets – any type of food that doesn’t need to be in a fridge or freezer.

BiG Challenge

The BiG Challenge teams have done really well again this year, running their businesses and making money for themselves. Teams have submitted their final reports and we wait to see if any of them are successful in getting through to the finals.

Debate Team

On Tuesday night our newly formed debating team had their first match against Sheffield Park Academy. They did extremely well, showing confidence, passion and clear speech. The subject was ‘Should the police in the UK be armed?’ They fully researched the topic, making a convincing argument using facts, opinions and real life stories. They have a return match on 16th February. The students are: Courage Weye, Maissaa Aroub, Shereen Manla Ali, Saluni Abewickrama, Ebony Tagizadeh and Valmyne Sicott.

Student Council

The School Council continues to meet every month and at the moment they are discussing ways to improve the use of lockers in school and what activities could be added to the enrichment programme to give a better experience for all year groups.

Little Herd

During December, on both our website and in the local press, we proudly publicised our involvement with the Children’s Hospital charity Herd of Sheffield event.  This means that Sheffield Springs Academy will adopt, sponsor and decorate a 73cm tall elephant sculpture.  Our fundraising team have already been busy holding events, including cake sales and Christmas jumper day, towards raising our sponsor money of £500. Our next cake sale is being held on Friday 5th February with an Easter event to follow up next term.

Currently our little elephant is only known as LH39, but after an in school competition to name the elephant, we hope to have a name for our herd member very soon.  Updates will be posted on both our website and via twitter.

During the summer, our elephant, together with the rest of their herd - designed and decorated by businesses and other schools - will be displayed throughout Sheffield in high profile locations.
