Principal’s Letter - Friday 4th April 2014

Dear Parents and Carers

We would like to confirm that the last day of this term will be Friday 11th April.  All students should return on Monday 28th April on time, in correct uniform and fully equipped for learning.

A group of Y8 students led by Amber Cheetham organised and successfully completed a 10 mile sponsored bike ride for around Rother Valley on Monday 24th March.  Together they accumulated a respectable £177.  Well done to the group; Amber Cheetham, Bethany Howard, Bailey Bedford and Jordan Holdsworth with a special thank you to Mr Malkin, without his help the bike ride would not have been possible.  As a whole, the Academy raised £479 for Sports Relief.  This has been a combined effort from all students throughout Y7 to 6th form, activities on the day included cake sales, tug-of-war competition, penalty shoot-outs, sponsored silence and even students going around with a bucket for loose change.  Well done and thank you to all students and staff involved in this successful fundraising event.

The PE Department have been working with the Youth Sports Trust to become a quality mark school.  We believed we were a silver school across the areas of the PE curriculum and extra-curricular opportunities meaning our practices through sport and Physical Education are established.  On Tuesday we had the validation inspection where our practices were scrutinised. We are awaiting final confirmation that we are a Silver Quality Mark school that demonstrates high quality PE, physical activity and school sport at Sheffield Springs Academy can make a real difference to the lives of our young people.

Thank you to the parents and students who attended last night’s 6th Form Parents’ Evening.  There were a significant number of very positive comments regarding the good progress that our students are making, as well as sound advice on how students can achieve their targets.  Any parents who were unable to attend will be contacted and arrangements will be made to discuss students’ progress. In addition, a report containing comments and progress data will be sent out during the holiday.

Y8 parents evening will take place on Wednesday 9th April from 4pm.  Students have received their appointment cards and should be in the process of arranging appointments.  Please encourage your child to discuss the arranged appointments with you.  For the first time we will be offering complementary pie and peas for all parents and students attending on the evening.  We hope you will attend in support of your child and that the meal will prove a success in order that we can offer to all year groups in the future.

Next week sees the start of our production “Little Shop of Horrors”, it will run Monday to Wednesday from 7pm. Tickets are still available from the Academy priced at £3.00 each and £2.00 for concessions.

Several curriculum areas will be running support sessions for Y11 students during the Easter break.  Final details will be passed to students next week.

Rewards trips will take place next week for Y7 to Y10 students at the Academy.  Students have worked hard all term to earn Vivo Miles to spend on these rewards.  This term the reward trip is an afternoon of either ice skating or bowling on Friday 11th April. Students will leave the academy at around lunch time and return at the end of the day.  Y11 students will also take part in their Incentive Trip on Friday 11th April, qualifying students will receive more information next week.
