Friday 26th June 2015 – INSET Day (Academy closed to students)

Year 11 Easter School

Every Y11 student has been issued with a timetable of the support sessions taking place over the Easter holiday. Sessions will focus on either completing controlled assessments or revision and development of examination skills. With only 5 school weeks remaining before the GCSE examinations begin it is vital that students take advantage of the opportunities on offer at this crucial time. A copy of the Easter school timetable can also be found on the Academy website.

The Wizard of Oz

Throughout this week, the Academy has welcomed over 600 members of our community to watch this year's production of The Wizard of Oz. We are incredibly proud of all of our students who have worked extremely hard and with dedication and enthusiasm to bring the production together.  Special thanks to the Y13 performing arts students who have contributed extensively to the direction and choreography.  We are grateful to staff, students and members of the community who have watched the production and supported our performers and technical crew.

BiG Challenge

On Wednesday evening, 5 students attended the BiG Challenge Award Ceremony at the Royal Victoria Holiday Inn. The business ‘Recipes Worldwide’, were given a top prize in the Key Stage 4 category, each team member receiving a significant gift voucher to enjoy. The awards were presented at an Oscar style ceremony in the Grand Hall at the Royal Victoria by the Master Cutler David Grey MBE. Dignitaries from local, national and international businesses were also present and spoke about their experience and aspirations for the young people of Sheffield.

To achieve this award the girls scored high marks in all the categories showing an all-round aptitude for enterprise - watch out The Apprentice! They were highly commended for their approach to business development and their team work.  Each member of the team (Phoebe Alderton, Keisha Carpenter, Maisie Curtis, Zahava Nmezi and Kate Piper) finished the evening vowing to return next year to perform even better. Well done girls and well done to all our other teams who didn't make it through to the final but still made a profit from their enterprising ideas.

AMP Awards

A group of year 10 music students have been working very hard to prepare for the first visit of the AMP Awards at the O2 academy, Sheffield.

The team of musicians has composed two songs of their own to perform at the battle of the bands style event. The musicians, Max Henry, Cameron Hale, Shannon Edmond, Danielle Bello and Bradley Minott are ably supported by a business team headed up by Anna Turner and Joel Pashley. The business team has worked hard to promote the event and has enjoyed significant ticket sales for the event as well as selling merchandise on the night. This is the band’s first venture onto the big stage. No doubt we will be hearing more from My Chocolate Revel in the future!

Y8 Netball Team

On Tuesday, the Y8 netball team made their final trip of the season to Leeds.  Apart from the huge hail stones it was a great day.  A number of staff commented how polite our students were.

We played several games in our pool some of the better wins included beating John Smeaton Academy 10 -0.  Then came Park Academy, we dug very deep and beat them 4 – 0 to reach the Semi Finals.  We set off slowly against William Hulme Grammar school going 2 – 0 down, after several attempts we scored our first goal but unfortunately ran out of time and lost 2-1.  We were 3rd out of the Northern and Central United Learning academies.

This result concludes the amazing season the Y8 netball team have had.  They have won the league and been promoted to the A League, as well as enjoying big successes in both city tournaments.

Y9 Boys Football Team

We are very proud of our Y9 boy’s football team.  They have won the Sheffield Schools Championship without losing a game and will play in the Premiership of Sheffield Schools Football next season.  They finished the league programme with a fine 2-1 win at Meadowhead School last week.  The team have scored 33 goals and conceded only 8.

Our Community

We have been informed by Sheffield City Council that cheap and illegal tobacco has been found in some shops in Sheffield.  For further information including the dangers of such products, please see the letter to parents on our website.
