Principal’s Letter - Friday 24th January 2014

Dear Parents and Carers

Many thanks to those parents of Y11 students who attended parents evening yesterday.  Now that we have entered the final phase for Y11 it was nice to see students and parents receiving feedback to support improvements in examination performance this summer.  Parents were reminded that students should be spending 14 hours per week revising and will be issued with a Personal Learning Checklist next week.  This PLC will provide important information focusing on what actions students need to take to improve their grades.  A timetable of after school support and revision sessions was issued to all.  It is vital that students begin to take advantage of these opportunities if they are not doing so already.  We would also like to remind parents that Y11 students will be sitting externally moderated examinations during the week commencing 10th March.  These will help highlight strengths and weaknesses and will form the focus of further intervention prior to the final examinations in June.

The SEN Department will be running Y11 revision sessions in Maths every Monday and English every Friday, there will also be an opportunity to revise with the SEN Team in the half term holiday, details to follow nearer the time

Assemblies this week have focused on the theme of keeping healthy.  On this issue can we remind parents and students that energy drinks are not allowed in the Academy.  Media coverage this week has highlighted the negative impact these drinks can have on young people.  Students are allowed to bring into the Academy water in suitable bottles or containers. Next week Assemblies will be run by the team at “Safe at Last”.  This organisation provides information on keeping safe both in school and at home.

We are pleased to announce three new members of the Local Governing Body; Bev Annabels, Gareth Barker and Howard Webb.  They will each bring their skills and expertise to the Academy’s journey.

Last week our girl’s football team represented Sheffield United in a regional football tournament held in Derby.  All the goals came from Ally Vaughan and Leah Hartley with some fantastic linking play.  Player of the tournament for us was Reina Nascimento.  To put into context how well the girls have played, we competed in sector 4 of 4 of the North of England and within this sector over 100 teams competed - we came 3rd which was a huge achievement even more so as we were only one round away from Wembley.  The girls were a credit to the Academy with many positive comments from the organisers and other team coaches.
