Principal’s Letter - Friday 24th April 2015

Dear Parents and Carers

Date for your Diary

Monday 4th May 2015 – May Day Bank Holiday (Academy closed to students and staff)

Years 7, 8 and 9

Students in Y7, Y8 and Y9 will be preparing for important exams in English, mathematics and science.  These “mock SATs” will take place on 6th, 7th and 8th of May.  Please support your child with revision and by making sure they have all the necessary equipment.

Uniform

As the weather is finally warming, we would like to remind you that girls are permitted to wear black skirts however they must be knee length with dark/opaque tights.

Year 11

Tuesday night was success night for Sheffield Springs Academy.  Over 60 Y11 students attended the Octagon Centre of Sheffield University to receive an award celebrating their achievements so far.  The students were immaculately presented, superbly behaved and a credit to their families and to the school. The students were treated to motivational speeches and given example experiences of how hard work changes lives for the better.  A brilliant night with brilliant people.

On Thursday our Y11 dance and drama students completed their final exam.  All students worked extremely hard for the entire day to complete final preparations.  The day culminated with a show to family and friends.  Well done to all the performers for their outstanding effort and commitment.

Sport

Last Friday, seven of our students attended the Cue Zone into Schools Sheffield Championships.  They initially entered individually, where unfortunately Ben Ullyatt was knocked out in the first round, Dylan Billard, Jaimie-Lee Scaife, Sam Longstone, Mason Brown and Corbin Wild made it through to the top 32 before being knocked out and Sam Morley made it through to the top 16.

In the afternoon session Corbin scored 6 in the 60 second challenge which placed him in the top 10, and as a team of 5 they beat all the other schools to become the Sheffield relay champions.

On the day we had to nominate 3 students who had done particularly well throughout the scheme. Dylan Billard won a John Parris cue (a highly regarded cue maker) which was presented by Steve Davis and John Parris.

Food Bank

Sheffield Springs Academy’s food bank continues to be a success.  Should you or any member of the community need to access it, the procedures are very discrete.  Call or attend our main reception and ask to speak with Mrs Gowling, Mr Coombs or Mr Baker who will arrange a meeting at a convenient time.  Alternatively access can be gained via other agency workers (eg MAST) who will contact us directly on your behalf.

Charity Work

One of the charities we are supporting this year is the British Heart Foundation.  On Wednesday 29th April we ask that you donate items.  The British Heart Foundation will collect all donations from the Academy the following day.  All items are sold in British Heart Foundation charity shops in Sheffield and one bag of good quality items could generate up to £20 or more for the BHF.  What you need to do:

  • Fill a black bag with unwanted goods – quality shoes, clothing, books, CDs, Videos, DVDs, toys and bric-a-brac

  • Drop the bag off at the Academy (during school hours) on Wednesday 29th April (please do not send any items to school before or after this date).

Congratulations to last week’s “Stars of the Week”.  The following students were presented with certificates for displaying particularly high levels of commitment to their learning and showing an exemplary attitude:
