Principal’s Letter - Friday 23rd May 2014

Dear Parents and Carers

Term starts on Monday 2nd June.  It is vital that Y11 students attend as this is the last opportunity to revise before the important GCSE English exam on Tuesday 3rd June. Students are encouraged to attend the revision sessions during half term.  They have the programme.

All staff and students will return from the half term break on Monday 2nd June, it is imperative that all students have the correct uniform, we would be grateful if you could discuss Academy expectations with your child in an effort to ensure they wear a white shirt (tucked in) with top button fastened, Academy tie, black trousers/knee length skirt and black school shoes.  Students must also comply with expectations regarding jewellery, make up, piercings, earphones and mobile phones.  Outdoor coats, scarves and fashion jumpers should be removed at the student entrance.  Students failing to comply with any aspect of the above will be challenged.  Whilst discussing expectations we would be grateful if you could also discuss the importance of arriving on time not only for the start of the day but to each lesson.

We would like to take this opportunity to thank the 110 parents who represented students at Wednesday evening’s Y7 parents evening.  Attendees were incredibly supportive towards the school, staff and more importantly their child making progress with their learning.

On Wednesday a group of Y10’s spent the day at Manor Top Army Barracks where staff and students were put through their paces.  Staff and students learnt about various roles within the forces and completed various challenges and tasks.  Students were a credit to the Academy and we look forward to working with the Barracks in the future.

The Y8 boy’s football team performed very well in two “end of season” tournaments.  By invitation of Sheffield United FC at their training ground the team won one game coming from 3-0 down to win 4-3 with a tremendous team effort.  The second tournament took place on Wednesday of this week where the boys travelled to William Hulme Grammar School in Manchester.  They took on 8 other schools form Salford, Accrington, Hull, Oxford and Cumbria.  After 7 exciting games, the team finished second overall to a very strong Manchester Academy team.  We have had a very successful and enjoyable season, at all times the boys were a credit to themselves and their parents, they were also excellent ambassadors for the Academy.

Wednesday evening saw the graduation of our Y11 students who have being working with Sheffield University Medical School. The SOAMS scheme runs from Y9 and the students take part in various activities over the years related to medicine and working as a Doctor.  The evening saw several talks from prominent figures within medical education, awards and presentations marking the beginning of a long journey to a career as a Doctor for the students.
