Principal’s Letter - Friday 21st November 2014

Dear Parents and Carers

Externally moderated examination series starts on Monday 24th November for our Y11 students.  Please encourage your child to continue revising at home over the weekend.

On Thursday 27th September the Academy will be holding its “Time to Shine” evening.  The event will run between 6pm and 7pm in the main school hall.  We would like to invite all Y 7 students and their families to attend.  The evening will provide an opportunity for students to demonstrate and discuss what they have been learning in their springs board curriculum and how it has linked to the project of “Sheffield the city and its surrounding countryside” which started in the summer term of Y6.  Last year the event was really well attended and the Academy received lots of positive feedback. We are hoping for a similar experience this year so please come along and support our students.

Sheffield Springs Academy has just received the Sainsbury’s School Games Bronze Award for 2013/2014.  The Sainsbury's School Games Mark is a Government led awards scheme launched in 2012 to reward schools for their commitment to the development of competition across their school and into the community.  Springs was one of a handful of schools and Academies that was visited to ensure that our application was correct.  A number of aspects were praised, including the range of sports that students can get involved in.

On Wednesday night the Y10 boy’s football team faced a tricky tie against Silverdale.  Springs got off to a perfect start when Blake Williams was brought down in the area for a clear penalty which Jack Charlesworth calmly slotted in home.  We thoroughly deserved the 4-1 victory with all the players being a credit to the Academy.  Well done: Mason George, Asa Wilcox, Sam Goodall, Daniel Lee, Harrison Ross, Kyle Blake, Jacob Bintcliffe, Jack Charlesworth, Tyler Fiddler, Kai Williams, Blake Williams and Ishmael Gafoor.

Our Y9 football team played against Birley with an 8-2 win, well done to all involved.

Over the current term, we have worked closely with the Links School Sports Partnership and local primary schools to ensure as many students as possible have access to the excellent sports facilities here at the Academy.  Children from Y5 at Gleadless Primary school have used the climbing wall and bike track as part of their enrichment programme of activities.

Y5 and Y6 students from Bankwood, Valley Park, Gleadless, Norfolk, Prince Edwards and Arbourthorne have used the sports hall to take part in a number of sports hall athletics events, with the top performing school representing our cluster of schools in the Sheffield finals in December.

A number of football competitions for Y5 and Y6 boys and girls have been held with Students from Carfield, Anns Grove, Wybourn, Valley Park, Bankwood, Prince Edwards, Norfolk and Manor Lodge all taking part. Wybourn Primary are also using  our Academy as their home pitch for all their league matches with teams from across Sheffield.

Prince Edward’s students are taking part in a series of trampolining lessons being run by Miss Sleaford and all Y2’s came over to Springs for a mini sports festival in October.

A number of our students have volunteered to help and officiate at all these events.
