Principal’s Letter - Friday 20th March 2015

Dear Parents and Carers

Attendance

We are always looking to improve systems and structures to ensure the best possible outcomes across the Academy.  A recent review of the Academy's attendance and punctuality system has led to a change to the procedure for requesting holiday leave.  With immediate effect parents/carers should submit a written request for a holiday to main reception marked for the attention of the attendance team.  You will be invited into the Academy by the attendance team to discuss the request and a decision will be made following that meeting.  The new system replaces the need for completing a “request for holiday” form and will ultimately streamline the process.

BiG Challenge

We have made it through to the final of the BiG Challenge and have had confirmation that one of our teams “Recipes Worldwide” is indeed a prize winner!  The team developed a recipe card idea to encourage healthy cooking and eating, using different recipes from across the world.  They presented their business idea to a panel of judges at SERO last Thursday where they met strong competition from schools and colleges across the city.  The team comprises of five Y10 students, Zahava Nmezi, Phoebe Alderton, Maisie Curtis, Kate Piper and Keisha Carpenter.  On Monday 9th March they were subjected to a trial presentation here at the Academy to a panel which together with Mr Heritage included representatives from the business world (HSBC, Kingfield Electronics and Veolia).  The students listened to the advice of the panel and then worked incredibly hard in the run up to their presentation at SERO.  The team will attend the prestigious BiG award event on 26th March at the Royal Victoria Holiday Inn where we will find out which prize they have secured. Perhaps the BiG trip to Rome!  Well done “Recipes Worldwide” you are a credit to our Academy.

Performing Arts

Our Y8 cheer squad competed at the South Yorkshire cheerleading finals on Wednesday 18th March at the English Institute of Sport. They fought off some tough competition to place 3rd overall. Huge congratulations to the girls and to Megan Pinder for leading the team. As always, the girls represented the Academy brilliantly and have done us all proud!

Wizard of Oz

A reminder that the Academy’s production of “The Wizard of Oz” runs on Tuesday 24th March (6pm), Wednesday 25th (4pm) and Thursday 26th (6pm).   Tickets are on sale from the Academy Box Office priced £4.00 and £2.00 for concessions (students, OAP's, unwaged).  There are over 40 students participating in the production this year.  The flyer attached was designed by Bwe Soe.

Fund Raising

Our fund raising team had great fun planning and running a Red Nose Day fair. The team stayed behind on Thursday evening to decorate cookies, to be sold alongside fairy cakes, decorated by Mrs Taff’s child care class and muffins donated by our catering staff.  Other stalls included “Name the Teddy” and “Guess the Number of Sweets in the Tub”.  The teddy was won by a Y8 student and is now named Barry.  One of our teachers, Mrs Jackson, won the “Guess the Number of Sweets in the Tub” by correctly guessing 417 sweets!  Students were also able to show off their painted faces, very creatively applied by our Performing Arts department, in our photo booth.  Well done to all involved and thank you to everyone for their support and money, over £239 was raised by everyone’s efforts.

Our Community

Streets Ahead maintenance work is coming to roads around Gleadless Common, Gleadless Road and parts of Intake. The highway team have been into the academy to inform us of road re-surfacing which is due to take place in August over the six week holiday period.
