Principal’s Letter - Friday 1st May 2015

Dear Parents and Carers

Date for your Diary

Monday 4th May 2015 – May Day Bank Holiday (Academy closed to students and staff).  We would also like to confirm the Academy will remain open for the rest of the week despite Election Day on Thursday.

Attendance

We would like to remind you that school starts for all students at 8.35am.  Please support us in ensuring that your child arrives on time and ready to learn.  We would also like to congratulate Y8 students on their fantastic attendance to school which remains above the national average. You will be aware our minimum expectation is that all students have an attendance of 97%.  Last week, Y 8 students hit this expectation and as a group achieved 97%. This is a fantastic effort from this group of students and will support them in making progress with their learning through school.

Years 7, 8 and 9

Next week sees our KS3 students sit some very important examinations in the core subjects of English, maths and science.  Students should be preparing themselves for these exams with revision at home.

Duke of Edinburgh (Bronze Award)

A group of Y10 students went to Silverwood campsite last weekend to complete the practice expedition part of their Duke Of Edinburgh Bronze Award. Over the two days, they used a map to find their way around unfamiliar territory, completed six hours of walking with full rucksacks and pitched their own tents.  They did extremely well in the face of sore feet, taking wrong turnings and coping with the sudden drop in temperatures which made Saturday night a very cold one indeed.  Well done all of you.

Bikeability

Over the past two weeks, sixteen Y8 students have been taking part in a series of cycle training sessions with trainers from Cycle Experience. Students cycled along main roads and experience roundabouts, traffic lights and dealing with traffic. As a result of the training, it is hoped that the students have the confidence to cycle in traffic and be able to enjoy the benefits that cycling can bring to them. The instructors all commented on how polite and hardworking every single student was and how much they were a credit to the Academy.

London Marathon

Our very own Mr Richardson, Associate Principal, became part of a national institution on Sunday 26th April by becoming one of the 35,000 people taking part in the London Marathon.  The London Marathon takes runners on an amazing journey through London and currently holds the Guinness World Record for the largest fundraising event in the world.  Since its launch 34 years ago, runners have raised over £500m for charity.  In support of Mr Richardson running the 26.2 miles through London, the Academy has raised an amazing £284.27 in aid of the Sheffield Springs Academy food bank.

Well done Mr Richardson and thank you to everyone who has donated to this cause.

Yours sincerely                                          Yours sincerely                                                  Yours sincerely
