Principal’s Letter - Friday 19th June 2015

Dear Parents and Carers

Dates for your Diary

Friday 26th June 2015 – INSET day – Academy closed to students.

Y10 Enrichment

Y10 students will take part in enrichment/work experience Monday 6th July until Thursday 16th July 2015.  Students should attend the Academy in full uniform on Friday 17th July.

Ramadan

During the Ramadan period, a classroom, B34, will be available at lunchtimes to students observing the fast.  If your child wishes to use this facility, they can obtain a pass from Ms Harrison.  Ms Harrison is based by the Principal’s office.

Hay Fever

If your child has medication for hay fever, such as inhalers or eye drops, please ensure that they have this with them during school hours.  If medication is needed during the day, this can be administered by a first aider in school; this will hopefully help with any discomfort your child may feel.  Where possible, antihistamines should be taken at home under your supervision before they leave for school.  Please ensure that your child is aware that if they have any medication with them, under no circumstances should this be shared with other students.

After Hours

Please be aware that students should not be on site outside of school hours unless they are involved in a supervised activity.  The school is protected by high security fencing and cameras.  Students are risking serious injury by climbing over the fence to access the 3G football pitch.  A considerable amount of damage and wear and tear has been caused by unauthorised use.   Please support us in our efforts to prevent further problems by ensuring that you know where your child spends their time during the evenings, weekends and school holidays.  Please instruct them not to enter the school site, in particular the 3G football pitch.  Security cameras do cover all outside areas of school and steps will be taken to identify and prosecute any offenders.

Learning Resource Centre

As part of the Academy’s drive for improvement in literacy, all students have access to the Academy’s Learning Resource Centre (LRC).  The majority of students take full advantage of the opening hours (break, lunch and after school) to visit the LRC and browse through the wide selection of books in a quiet and relaxed atmosphere.  However, there are a number of students who now have books which are overdue and despite being reminded through form tutors and English teachers, they have still not been returned.  Between 22nd June and 17th July we will be running a book amnesty and all students returning books will receive 10 vivo points.  We would be grateful if you would ask your child to check at home for any books they many have which they have forgotten about.  Thank you for your support.

Performing Arts

On Monday 15th June, we held our annual summer showcase which saw over 50 students from Y7 to Y13 perform a variety of work.  There were a number of highlights throughout the evening including an extract from the musical ‘Annie’ performed by our Y7 and Y8 performing arts group.  A number of students were also award winners on the night;

  • Y7 PA student of the year: Isabelle Donnelly

  • Y8 PA student of the year: Amber Raynes

  • Y9 PA student of the year: Ben West

  • Y10 dancer of the year: Lauren Fletcher

  • Y10 Actor of the year: Gabby Ndiomo

  • Y10 Musician of the year: Sam Longstone

  • United Learning KS3 dancer of the year: Georgia Evans

The evening was also an opportunity to publicly thank and congratulate our Y13 performing arts students, who are leaving us this year, for their efforts and commitment to the department and the Academy. We would like to wish these students the best of luck for their future endeavours.  Finally, the performing arts team would like to congratulate all students involved in another fantastic performance evening and thank those who joined us to watch the event.

Sport

Wednesday evening the Y8 team took part in a Rounders tournament at Ecclesfield.  We had a really tough draw playing Ecclesfield in the first game then taking on King Ecgberts and finally Sheffield High School where the girls played brilliantly and were complimented on their fielding tactics by both schools.  Unfortunately we lost both games.  We would like congratulate all who took part including our mascot Georgia Evans for cheering us on from the side lines with Miss Grant.
