Principal’s Letter Friday 14th March 2014

Dear Parents and Carers

We would like to take this opportunity to congratulate our students on their attendance to school this week.  It has been consistently above the national average all week which is a great achievement.  As ever the support from parents to make sure students arrive regularly and on time to learning is crucial. Thank you for your continued efforts.

As detailed in my letter sent home earlier this week I would like to remind you that if the planned strike (Wednesday 26th March) goes ahead we may have to partially close the Academy to some students.  I will contact you closer to the date to confirm which year groups will be affected.

Y11 students finish their latest round of internal examinations today and should be praised for the mature approach they have shown.  These examinations will be marked by subject teachers and to ensure accuracy will then be sent off to be moderated by examiners outside of the Academy.  Students will receive their results on Thursday 10th April.

On Thursday a group of Y7s and Y10s visited Birmingham NEC Arena to take part in the national Big Bang Fair. Students had the opportunity take part in a variety of workshops and activities all relating to Science, Maths, Technology and Engineering.  All the workshops were run by leaders in their fields, University students or in some cases other school students demonstrating their work.  During the visit our students also had the opportunity to either be in the audience for the BBC show “Gastronauts” or to see a show demonstrating the science behind explosions.  Over 5000 students were at attendance and our students behaved exemplary and were a credit to the Academy.

This week some of our Sixth Form students took part in a debating competition at Sheffield Hallam University competing against seven other Sixth Form teams from across South Yorkshire.  Each prepared their own individual arguments thoroughly and as a result of regular rehearsals produced a professional, articulate and powerful performance.  They won their heat and we hope to hear soon as to whether they made the finals which will take place in June.  Congratulations and well done to; Fran Corker,  Amy Daniels, Mereden Haigh, Megan Pinder, Oliver Rowland and Emily Siddall.
