Principal’s Letter - Friday 14th February 2014

Dear Parents and Carers

Reminder - the last day of this half term for students is Thursday 20th February.  Friday 21st February is an INSET day for staff.  Students and staff will return on Monday 3rd March.

You may have noticed that work is currently being undertaken by Sheffield City Council Highways Team at the junction where Hurlfield Road meets East Bank Road.  Traffic calming and a zebra crossing are being installed to increase road safety in this area.  Works will be undertaken for approximately 6 weeks, during this time, Sheffield City Council have guaranteed that pedestrian safety will be paramount.  We would welcome your support in reiterating the importance of road safety and being extra vigilant during periods of poor weather conditions.

We would like to remind you that mobile phones (and ear phones) are not permitted in the Academy.  These items will be confiscated until the end of the day should any student fail to comply.

On World Book Day (7th March), we have arranged for a publisher to visit the Academy.  All our Y7 and Y8 students will receive a free book of their choice.  To coincide with World Book Day we will be asking students to bring in one of their old books to donate to Oxfam.  Oxfam will collect and sell their books with all proceeds going to their charity.

Recently, a panel of charity volunteers has been created within Y7.  Two students from each Y7 form have been selected and will liaise between the panel and their forms to promote fund raising for identified charities.  Their first event “send a friendship message for Valentine’s Day” was very successful.  For a cost of just 50p, students’ messages together with a small bag of sweets were delivered to recipients throughout the day.

Rachel Ward and Robin McEwan from Sheffield Music Hub visited Y7 students in assembly today and performed some wonderful flute duos.  They performed the theme from the film Shrek as well as the Super Mario theme!  Three Y7 students; Nkosi Dube, Georgia Evans and Thomas Lowe joined in the performance adding a wonderful impromptu part for the ‘boom-whacker’ to the delight of the whole year group.  Rachel Ward is our new flute teacher who joined us in December from Sheffield Music Hub.  Rachel has availability in flute lessons and would like any students who are keen to try out the flute to come forward.  There is no charge for the initial trial lessons however a small cost for the weekly lessons would follow should your child wish to continue - instruments will be provided, please contact Mr Egan for any further information.

This week has seen a very successful “Respect Campaign”.  Students were rewarded with raffle tickets for being respectful and dignified.  Students have enjoyed the opportunity to be entered into a prize draw for carrying out behaviours we usually take for granted ie polite responsible behaviour, saying please and thank you and holding open doors for others.  The winning tickets will be drawn during assemblies next week.

Assemblies this week have focused on Valentine’s Day and the origins of the celebration.
