Principal’s Letter - Friday 12th June 2015

Dear Parents and Carers

Dates for your Diary

Friday 26th June 2015 – INSET day – Academy closed to students.

Y10 Enrichment

Y10 students will take part in enrichment/work experience Monday 6th July until Thursday 16th July 2015.  Students should attend the Academy in full uniform on Friday 17th July.

Attendance

We would like to reiterate the importance of regular attendance to school. If young people are to make progress with their learning then they must attend regularly and on time.  A large number of students arrive on time to school and lessons and have attendance which meets our minimum expectation of 97%. Some students still have a 100% attendance since September which is exceptional! Please support us in ensuring that your child arrives for 8.30am each day. We will then ensure that your child arrives to tutor time on time and prepared for their day ahead.

Illness

We would like to clarify expectations regarding sending students home who are unwell during the school day.  We will only allow students to go home if we have spoken to parents and agreed that they can be collected.  Under no circumstances will students be allowed to make their own way home. We are sure you will understand that this is to ensure that students remain safe and are monitored during their period of illness. It is also important that if a child is unwell they speak to someone in school in the first instance rather than call their parents immediately.  We have found that this can often cause parents unnecessary worry. Staff at school can assess student’s medical needs and contact parents if required.

Enterprise

A group of Y9 students are participating in a new enterprise initiative.  10 students are working together with a local business “Jellybean Campers”.  Jellybean Campers hire out their fun campervan for holidays and touring.  Our students have been asked by the company director to form a team and come up with a new online marketing strategy for the company who are set to expand their business in the near future. Working together with Liz Yoxall from Giraffe Learning and Nicola Marshall, company director our students are competing in small teams.  Nicola and Liz brought the Jellybean camper van in to the Academy on Tuesday afternoon and the students had the chance to experience it first-hand.  All agreed that it was a very worthwhile project.  The project will run over the next three weeks, at the end of which a winning team will be chosen.

Fundraising

To finish off a very productive fundraising year, on Monday 22nd June and Wednesday 1st July our year 7 & 8 students respectively will take part in a sponsored run/walk.  This activity will take place around the Academy’s running track and, as well as raising money for charity, students will be able to earn Vivos by completing a lap.  Last year our year 7 students entered the event with enthusiasm and raised a colossal £417 for their chosen charities.  This year our charities are St Lukes Hospice, British Hearth Foundation and WWF.

Sport

On Tuesday night a group of Y9 students attended the Sheffield Schools Rounders Tournament. The students won their first game against King Ecgberts putting them at the top of their group. They then took victory over Ecclesfield getting all of their players out with 6 balls to go. This saw the group advance to the semi-finals where they unfortunately lost to Meadowhead (who went on to win the whole tournament). Well done on an excellent effort to Sam Morley, Liam Fisher, Kieran Wright, Kian Shepard, Danen Crabtree, Shauna Travis, Saphire Roberts, Leah Hartley, Destiny Norman and Reina Nascimento.

Food Bank

If you are able to donate, please provide essential items such as; milk (UHT or powdered), sugar, fruit juice (cartons), soup, pasta sauces, sponge pudding (tinned), tomatoes (tinned), cereals, rice pudding (tinned), tea bags/instant coffee, instant mash potato, rice/pasta, tinned meat/fish, tinned fruit, jam, biscuits or snack bar.  We are also now in a position to accept toiletry items such as soaps, shower gels, deodorants and toilet rolls.

Your child can deliver items to the Academy shop during opening times (before school, break and at lunch time) or if you would prefer to bring the items yourself, donations can be made to our main reception.
