Principal’s Letter - Friday 10th January 2014

Dear Parents and Carers

We would like to begin by wishing you all a very Happy New Year.

Our new improved website is now live.  Copies of this letter, term dates, dates of events and important information can all be found at www.sheffieldsprings-academy.org.

We have seen a positive start to the new term and we thank you for your continued support regarding attendance, particularly within Y8.  Our attendance target for each student is 95%.  Please discuss with your son or daughter their current level of attendance and where appropriate congratulate them for their efforts.

As a reminder we would like to reiterate our uniform policy; all students should arrive at the Academy wearing a blazer, shirt – buttoned up to the top, tie, black trousers or skirt (knee length) and black shoes.  Our students look incredibly smart when they comply with these expectations and we welcome your support.  An appropriate change of clothes is required for Dance and please also note that students will be requested to remove their shoes and socks for these lessons.

In our ongoing quest to improve literacy, our Y7 students will have the exciting opportunity to meet Tommy Donbavand on 14th January 2014.  Tommy is a renowned children’s author who has written bestselling series such as ‘Scream Street’ and ‘Fangs Vampire Spy’.  Along with a selection of his books readily available from the Academy’s LRC, students will have the opportunity to purchase books and have them signed on the day of the visit.  The books will cost approximately £5.00.

Parents of Y9 students have been invited to the Guided Pathways Evening on Tuesday 14th January 2014 at 6:00pm.

The purpose of the evening is to outline the Guided Pathways process that all Y9 students will be part of this term.  The process will seek to match students with those subjects where they are able to combine interest with success.

This term signals the start of a very significant time for our Y11 students.  They have started their final full term of schooling before the very important GCSE examinations in the summer.  There are only 14 school weeks left before these examinations start and it is imperative that every student attends every lesson and ensures they are producing their best work.  Each student will receive a Personal Learning Checklist for every subject they study telling them what they need to do to achieve their target grades including attending after school revision sessions.  Details of Curriculum Area after school revision sessions will be shared with your son or daughter and it goes without saying that all our Y11 students should be putting their academic studies as their number one priority from now onwards. Attendance at these sessions can have a dramatic impact on examination performance.  Students will also be given advice on how to produce a revision timetable and how to revise effectively.  Parents can support revision programmes by helping students organise their time, praise and reward students for time spent revising and help provide a suitable quiet area for revision to take place in.  We recommend students are doing 14 hours of revision per week at the moment but more hours as the examinations get closer.

I would like to draw the attention of Y11 parents’ to a very important upcoming event.  Thursday 23rd January is Y11 Parents Evening and will run from 4:00pm until 6:00pm.  I cannot stress how important it is that students and parents attend this event.  Subject staff will have vital information on how grades can be improved and what students need to do from now until the exams to help them achieve their target grades.

This term also signals the closure of the UCAS Progress process where Year 11 students apply for their Post 16 places or apprenticeships. The deadline for all applications is 31 January 2014. Our Careers Advisor Suzanne Walker will be in the academy on Wednesdays and Thursdays for any student needing help or support in this area.

Y11 students will be collecting their GCSE trial exam results during a presentation on Wednesday 15th January at 2:00pm.  Students will receive their own personalised grade sheet showing:

  • Trial examination grades – sat week commencing 2nd December 2013
  • Current up to date grades - for courses without exams

  • Qualifications Already Achieved – any qualifications students have already achieved within GCSE or Functional Skills

We will be asking students to be aware of how they are progressing as they move into their last sixth months of Y11.

Upon receipt of the grade sheet, if parents/students have any questions, they will be asked to contact the relevant member of staff by emailing the generic email account below.  Emails will then be distributed to the correct person.
